This plan envisions a beautiful, vibrant, and sustainable future for downtown Far Rockaway. An analysis of the downtown area as well as the surrounding neighborhoods resulted in recommendations for beautifying the streets and sidewalks and diversifying economic activity in the downtown, attracting residents, visitors, and business owners from the entire Rockaway peninsula.
The project will make short-term recommendations for streetscape improvements and temporary plazas, and include a longer-term vision that situates Far Rockaway as an important and popular center of the Peninsula–for downtown recreation, daily needs, and job creation for local residents.
During the research phase of this project, WE Design organized community meetings and workshops in order to supplement information gathered from GIS analysis and site visits. The resulting plan integrates green infrastructure installations into a network of new open spaces, parking lots, sidewalks, and waterfront sites to manage stormwater, prevent flooding, and build resiliency from storm surges.
